For years, Medicare drug plans could not cover GLP-1 medications used only for weight management. That changed on July 1, 2026, when the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services launched the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. If you have Medicare and have been told a weight management medication is “not covered,” here is what you should know.
What the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Covers
The Bridge is a temporary federal program that runs through December 31, 2027. Eligible people pay a $50 copay for a one-month supply of certain GLP-1 medications used for weight management. As of October 2026, covered products are Wegovy (injection and pill), Foundayo, and the Zepbound KwikPen. Zepbound single-dose pens and vials are not covered.
The Bridge operates outside your regular Part D plan. That means the $50 copay does not count toward your Part D deductible or yearly out-of-pocket limit, and Extra Help cannot lower it.
Who May Qualify
You must have Medicare drug coverage through a qualifying plan and be 18 or older. You must also meet one of three groups based on your body mass index (BMI) when you started GLP-1 treatment:
- A BMI of 35 or higher
- A BMI of 30 or higher with certain heart failure, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or chronic kidney disease stage 3a or higher
- A BMI of 27 or higher with prediabetes, a past heart attack or stroke, or symptomatic peripheral artery disease
People with type 2 diabetes, moderate to severe sleep apnea, or a form of fatty liver disease called MASH are not eligible, because their regular Part D plan may cover a GLP-1 for those conditions instead.
How the Process Starts
There is no separate application. Your prescriber sends a prescription to your pharmacy, the pharmacy submits a claim, and that claim starts the prior authorization process. Medicare mails you a letter with the decision. There is no formal appeals process under the Bridge, so a complete, accurate first request matters. Be cautious of anyone who calls offering to enroll you.
Talk with Your Healthcare Team
Only your prescriber can decide whether a GLP-1 medication is right for you. If you have questions about eligibility or a pending request, you can also call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
